Summary

Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) is seeking a visionary and strategic thinking Vice President of Facilities to lead all aspects of facilities strategy, planning, operations, and infrastructure stewardship across one of the nation’s premier academic medical institutions. This executive leader will guide the long-term growth of our campus footprint while ensuring dependable, safe, and high-quality daily operations that enable our world class education, clinical care, and research missions.


This role is ideal for a seasoned facilities executive with deep expertise in academic medicine environments and someone who thrives at the intersection of strategy, capital development, operations excellence, and mission alignment. This position is eligible for an annual performance-based bonus.


The Vice President of Facilities oversees all facilities-related strategy and operations across a complex and highly specialized portfolio that includes 1.9 million square feet of medical research space, 500,000 square feet of outpatient clinical space, 800,000 square feet of education and administrative space, and 500,000 square feet of leased facilities. This role provides executive leadership for an operating budget of approximately $20 million and a capital budget ranging from $10–$15 million, ensuring optimal stewardship of institutional resources. The Vice President also manages the infrastructure and reliability of a large onsite central plant supporting steam and chilled water production, while partnering with mission leadership to align space planning, capital investments, and daily operations with the College’s strategic priorities.

Key Leadership Responsibilities

Strategic Facilities Leadership

  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive facilities strategy that supports BCM’s long-term institutional vision.
  • Make data driven recommendations for space planning, renovation, leasing, acquisition, and disposition to ensure the College maintains the right mix of high performing assets.
  • Partner with senior leaders across Education, Clinical, and Research missions to align the facilities master plan with upcoming initiatives and growth priorities.

 

Capital Planning and Project Oversight

  • Provide executive oversight of all capital projects from concept and scope development through design, budgeting, construction, and closeout.
  • Ensure all projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and aligned to institutional standards and compliance requirements.
  • Foster a culture of transparency, collaboration, and quality across internal teams and external contractors.

 

Operational Excellence and Emergency Readiness

  • Direct facilities maintenance and operations teams to ensure seamless, interruption free function of all campus and off site spaces.
  • Coordinate with landlords and partners in leased facilities to ensure reliable utilities and timely maintenance.
  • Serve as a key leader during critical events (e.g., hurricanes, freezing weather, electrical outages), guiding BCM’s Facilities emergency response and ensuring preparedness for future scenarios.

 

Financial and Administrative Stewardship

  • Oversee capital and operational budgeting, ensuring fiscal integrity and resource optimization.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Risk Management, and Accounting on insurance, FEMA claims, and operational risk mitigation.
  • Lead the Facilities administrative team including all HR responsibilities such as hiring, performance management, and corrective action.

 

Space Governance and Institutional Alignment

  • Manage the BCM Space Committee, ensuring mission critical initiatives are prioritized, resourced, and executed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain strong partnerships with leaders across the institution to ensure facilities decisions advance BCM’s goals.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned in support of institutional operations and strategic evolution.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture or directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Ten years of experience in facilities management or planning in a higher education or research institution.  
  • Five or more years in a management capacity.

Department-specific Requirements

  • Valid driver's license; clean driving record; three years of driving history in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience leading a Facilities or Planning Team at an academic medical institution.
  • State registration as an architect or engineer.
  • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA).
