Summary
The Center for Comparative Medicine provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals.
Participates in all aspects of the health and welfare of laboratory animals, including daily monitoring and treatment, maintaining accurate health records and study records, and providing requested technical services that includes inducing and monitoring anesthesia for multiple species, post-operative animal care, and other animal-related activities.
Must be able to work overnight, weekend, and holiday ICU shifts on a rotational basis.
Job Duties
- Provide veterinary care to all animals at Texas Heart Institute at BCM, as well as BCM as needed.
- Perform daily observations, health checks, and treatments on animal patients, under the guidance of veterinarians.
- Responsible for maintaining daily treatment records, anesthetic records, post-operative records, drug logs, inventory records, and study related data.
- Provide technical and research support to investigators, which can include injections, blood collections, anesthesia support, post-operative care, and treatments as directed by veterinarians.
- Provide post-operative ICU care and study related procedures that can include weekend and overnight shifts as needed.
- Support other animal or study related activities.
- Provide veterinary care to animals at Texas Heart Institute at BCM, which can include preparation of the animal procedures, performing anesthesia, providing post-operative ICU cares, and other animal related activities.
- Provide veterinary care to animals at BCM CCM as needed, as directed by veterinarians.
- Maintain and clean veterinary technical equipment, and sterilize surgical instruments as needed.
- Maintain and clean the veterinary preparation room and operation rooms after use.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's degree in a related field. Two years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- No experience required.
- Certified Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Certification must be obtained within one year of hire or promotion.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of relevant experience.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).
- Must be able to work with multiple animal species, including farm animals, rodents, and other species applicable.
- Must have general computer skills.
- Experiences related to large animal studies and medical device research are highly preferred.
