Summary

We seek a visionary Senior Bioinformatics Manager to architect and lead the data analysis platform that will transform biospecimens and clinical information into research-ready resources, directly enabling discoveries that could change how we understand and treat pediatric diseases. This is a leadership role for a dynamic individual who is passionate about leveraging big data to unravel the complexities of pediatric diseases. Position will be instrumental  in building and mentoring a top-tier team to build the informatics infrastructure that transforms these biospecimens and clinical data into research-ready resources. Reporting to the Biobank Directors, you will recruit and mentor a multidisciplinary team of bioinformatics analysts, database architects, and IT specialists while partnering closely with laboratory automation, compliance, and clinical informatics groups.

 

This position will be critical to the launch of Texas Children's revolutionary pediatric biobank that combines automated robotics, large-scale genomic data, and comprehensive health records to create an unparalleled resource for childhood disease research.

Job Duties

  • Architecture & Strategy: Design, implement, and continually refine a secure and scalable data platform built to handle whole-genome, multi-omics, sample metadata, and integrated EHR information.
  • Pipeline Development: Lead the creation and maintenance of robust, reproducible workflows for DNA/RNA sequencing, quality control (QC), and advanced downstream analyses, including variant annotation and data aggregation.
  • Team Leadership: Build a world-class bioinformatics team by hiring, developing, and supervising staff. Foster a culture of scientific rigor, transparency, and continual learning to push the boundaries of pediatric research.
  • Data Governance & Compliance: Champion data integrity and patient privacy by ensuring strict adherence to HIPAA and all institutional policies. Establish and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and define critical QC metrics across the entire data lifecycle.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Serve as the primary bioinformatics liaison between wet-lab automation teams, clinical partners, principal investigators, and external collaborators. Drive scientific discovery by contributing expertise to grants, manuscripts, and scientific presentations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in NGS data processing, cloud or HPC environments, workflow managers (Nextflow, Snakemake, Cromwell), containerization, and SQL database design.
  • Experience integrating genomic data with clinical/EHR systems in regulated settings.
  • Proven track record of building and managing high-performing teams and delivering complex projects on time.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a commitment to reproducibility, data security, and patient privacy.
    Familiarity with genomics analysis, LIMS integration, and AWS or comparable cloud platforms.
  • Experience with robotic or automated laboratory pipelines
