Summary
The Department of Pediatrics is excited to fill a new role that will assist the Department Administrator serving as a Deputy Administrator. This position oversees multiple service lines to ensure programs are delivered effectively, efficiently, and securely. As a senior strategy advisor to the Department Administrator, assists in the planning, organization, direction, evaluation, and improvement of health care operations, research administration and operations programs, human capital efforts, and fiscal accountability. Reporting directly to the Department Administrator, the role will serve as a leader and influence within the organization. The role is expected to act with full authority in the absence of the Department Administrator. In addition, works closely with Department Chair and Vice Chairs as well as Texas Children's Hospital (TCH) administrative leadership. The Department of Pediatrics has in excess of 1,000 faculty and an overall budget of $500+ million.
Areas of Primary Focus: Includes financial management, talent management, mission operations. Focus areas will be inpatient operations and education mission related initiatives. Operational oversight working closely with Division Chiefs, Administrators and TCH Practice Administrators in the following areas – CCM, PEM, PHM, Newborn, Palliative Care, Infectious Disease, Resident Programs, Graduate Medical Education Programs totaling faculty count of 470 and an aggregate budgeted activity in excess of $181 million. Oversight and strategic support for Education Mission related initiatives and operational activities.
The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge and experience with affiliate hospital systems.
Job Duties
Financial Management:
- Oversees financial operations to ensure adherence to prudent and generally accepted accounting practices.
- Advocates for and communicates high standards, holding staff and faculty accountable to Department and College financial management policies.
- Analyzes financial reports and provides guidance and recommendations for action to the Department Administrator.
Talent Management:
- Works closely and in coordination with Department HR Administrator.
- Acts as a thought partner to the Department Administrator to define and operationalize an administrative structure conducive to meeting and exceeding Department goals.
- Engages with College Human Resources leaders to enhance two-way communication and connect policy and programs with Department application.
- Designs Department processes, in collaboration with the Department Administrator, to align with College policy and enhance the employee experience.
- Assists with Department employee relation matters as necessary.
Mission Operations:
- Leads Department projects as necessary including but not limited to provide primary direction and assessment of Department SOP’s and workflow in all mission areas.
- Assists Department Administrator on projects with BCM and TCH for successful execution.
- Provides general direction and guidance to Divisions Chiefs and Division Administrators of identified areas. The long term plan is to have all Division Administrators in the inpatient umbrella report to this position.
Research:
- Works closely with Division Leaders and RRO administration as needed.
Clinical:
- Works closely with Division and TCH Administrative Leaders on clinical practice needs, productivity, patient satisfaction.
Education:
- Works closely with Division and Department leaders related to training programs.
- Assists in the development of strategic and short-term planning processes and facilitates the obtainment and validation of data needed for strategic decision-making.
- Serves as a strategic resource to Chair/Center Director and Department/Center leadership to shape and advance strategic priorities and initiatives.
- Coordinates efforts to define priorities, report on progress, and ensure that the priorities are integrated into decision-making.
- Works collaboratively with Department/Center leadership to develop a framework to effectively communicate and implement key performance indicators and strategic metrics that identify the current state, craft the path to the future state and provide presentation of project status compared to milestones.
- Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and approving hours worked of at least 3 employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Eleven years of directly related experience with four years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree and seven years of directly related experience with four years of supervisory experience will also be considered.
- Working knowledge and experience with affiliate hospital systems.
