Summary
We are looking to hire a Research Coordinator II to help with studies of traumatic brain injury at Ben Taub Hospital. The position will involve enrollment of patients with traumatic brain injury into research studies funded by NIH, DoD or other funding sources. The patients will be evaluated in the emergency room or neurosurgery ICU at Ben Taub Hospital. Eligible patients will be consented and undergo study procedures that include blood draws, questionnaires/neuropsychological assessments, and advanced MRI imaging.
The Research Coordinator II will evaluate patients for eligibility, consenting them for the studies, and then obtaining all of the required procedures at each study visit and entering the data obtained into the web-based databases. The Research Coordinator II will also schedule research participants for tests and procedures, such as laboratory tests, x-rays, and other studies specific for the research protocol. This position will work with other research coordinators to help with completion of ongoing research projects at Ben-Taub Hospital.
Job Duties
- Assesses patients with traumatic brain injury to determine eligibility for ongoing research studies that involve evaluating blood-based biomarkers, ICU treatment strategies for brain injury, neuroprotective drug treatments.
- Determines if patients are able to consent for themselves. If not, finds appropriate LAR to consent.
- Explains studies to patient or LAR and obtains consent.
- Collects study data regarding demographics, nature and severity of the brain injury, and symptoms related to the injury.
- Enters study data into research database.
- Draws blood samples via venipuncture or through existing venous catheter and processes the samples per the study procedures.
- Maintains regulatory documents for ongoing studies. Keeps in touch with patient after hospital discharge to minimize lost to follow-up and arranges follow-up study visits.
- Obtains MRI imaging and performs neuropsychological outcome testing during follow-up visits.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- One year of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Medial degree preferred.
- Patient care experience.
- Experience or training in an emergency room or ICU setting.
- Fluency in Spanish.
