Summary
The Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a caring, compassionate, and reliable Medical Assistant II to support clinicians in the Cystic Fibrosis Program, providing specialized care to patients with cystic fibrosis and related pulmonary conditions. We are looking for candidates with excellent interpersonal skills and a strong commitment to patient-centered care in a multidisciplinary clinical setting.
The Medical Assistant II will assist in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of physicians and advanced practice providers. Responsibilities include collecting clinical data, supporting diagnostic procedures, and ensuring smooth clinic operations. Familiarity with chronic disease management and respiratory care is highly desirable. Shifts may include 7:30–4:30, 8:00–5:00, or 9:30–6:30, Monday–Friday.
This position is located at the McNair Campus.
Job Duties
- Greets and escorts patients to exam rooms, ensuring comfort and privacy.
- Performs routine clinical tasks including vital signs, oxygen saturation monitoring, spirometry setup, and specimen collection.
- Collects patient histories, including medication reconciliation and symptom tracking.
- Accurately documents patient information in EPIC.
- Supports providers during procedures and patient education sessions.
- Schedules diagnostic tests, follow-up appointments, and multidisciplinary consultations.
- Maintains exam rooms and equipment in accordance with infection control protocols.
- Monitors and orders clinic supplies, including respiratory care materials.
- Answers clinic phones, triages calls, and manages patient messages and encounters.
- Assists with patient check-in, registration, and insurance verification.
- Educates patients and families at the direction and guidance of the physician on cystic fibrosis management, medication adherence, and home care techniques.
- Supports coordination of care across specialties by assisting with appointments, including nutrition, social work and pulmonary medicine.
- Cross-trains to support other subspecialty clinics as needed.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives and registry data collection.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
- Two years of relevant experience.
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, or AMCA).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Epic EMR.
- Experience with respiratory care procedures and chronic disease management.
- Proficiency in Spanish or other language.
- Flexible schedule and ability to work in a team-based environment.
- Knowledge of cystic fibrosis, pulmonary terminology, and multidisciplinary care coordination.
- Ability to type at a minimum of 40 WPM.
