Summary
The Margaret M. and Albert B. Alkek Department of Medicine, Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, is recruiting for a Medical Assistant with clinical knowledge to support the clinical operation within the department in a clinical and telephone triaging capacity. The candidate will support our exciting new Live Answer Medical Team and serve as a float in the section as needed. This position is an outpatient position located at the McNair Campus in the Texas Medical Center with a general work schedule of Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
Job Duties
- Performs medical phone triaging for patients calling for medical guidance from their health care team.
- Clearly documents pertinent medical information to be communicated to or from the patient.
- Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, collecting specimens, and safely preforming laboratory Point of Care Testing.
- Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation and enters medical information into the EMR system (EPIC).
- Properly notes the primary complaint/reason for patient’s visit.
- Assists with procedures as needed while working within the clinic, including but not limited to administering vaccines and/or medications under direction of a supervising provider.
- Schedules patient tests, procedures, and appointments.
- Responds to routine patient phone calls and My Chart messages and route to either nurse or provider for assistance as needed.
- Performs clerical/administrative responsibilities such as filing and/or scanning patient medical records, obtains lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
- Maintains clean and safe work environment; stocks supplies for various department needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and completion of an approved Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
- No experience required.
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, or AMCA). New employees who are not currently certified, must obtain certification within six months of employment.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
