Summary

Oversees operation and maintaining stationary equipment such as steam boilers, air compressors, generators, turbines, and refrigeration equipment at the Central Plant. Under management guidance, leads, trains, and mentors a team of stationary engineers, ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and supports efficient facility operations. Operates Johnson Controls and Siemens building automation systems to ensure peak performance of the systems. Maintains climate controls of critical spaces in the complex which includes, but not limited to, animal holding rooms, computer server systems, and research senstive areas where the climate must be at tolerable levels at all times. Must be willing to work any shift. Available during shutdowns and on call on weekends and holidays. 

Job Duties

  • As the lead stationary engineer on the shift you will ensure that the steam boilers are running at peak efficiencies which include maintenance tear downs of each boiler annually.
  • Ensures that the Chilled Water Refrigeration System is running at peak efficiency.
  • Leads, mentors, and guides a ream of stationary engineers.
  • Assigns daily tasks, coordinate work schedules, and ensure completion of work orders.
  • Provides on the job training and technical direction.
  • Serves as the shift or department lead during emergencies or high priority events. 
  • Ensures all equipment and operations comply with local, state, and federal codes and safety regulations.
  • Maintains documentation for inspections, performance tests, and regulatory reporting. 
  • Promotes a culture of safety and enforce safe work practices across the team.
  • Assists with capital projects, system upgrades, and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Recommends improvements to system performance, energy efficiency, and maintenance practices. 
  • Conducts routine rounds of the Central Plant and associated buildings to inspect auxiliary pumps and equipment.
  • Monitors the Pan Alarm System which monitors research units such as freezers, cold and warm rooms, and refrigerators to ensure that the proper personnel are notified in case of an activated alarm.
  • Performs chemical analysis of Steam, Chilled Water, and Cooling Tower Systems each shift. 
  • Maintains Central Plant and ensures that it is neat and clean.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies at Baylor.
  • Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.
  • Performs inspection of equipment to detect routine malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication.
  • Reports to supervisors any developments that appear to lead to an unsafe operating condition. 
  • Performs preventive maintenance on various equipment to ensure peak efficiencies.
  • Performs small carpentry, plumbing or electrical maintenance work requested by departments. 
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Six years of relevant experience.
  • First Grade Stationary Engineer's license from the City of Houston.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience with Johnson Controls and Siemens building automation systems.
