Summary
Baylor College of Medicine, in partnership with the Department of Pathology & Immunology at Texas Children's Hospital, is seeking an Assistant Laboratory Director to provide scientific and operational leadership for a proteomics and metabolomics laboratory.
This Assistant Laboratory Director supports LC-MS/MS–based research and partners with the Laboratory Director and PI to manage daily lab operations, ensure high data quality, and advance research capabilities. Key responsibilities include laboratory and equipment management, resource and procurement oversight, budgeting and grants support, regulatory compliance, and coordination of staff training and workflows.
Job Duties
Research Operations & Scientific Support
• Support the Laboratory Director in overseeing proteomics research activities and experimental workflows.
• Ensure effective execution of LC-MS/MS–based proteomics and metabolomics studies.
• Oversee quality control, data integrity, and adherence to laboratory standards.
• Support development and implementation of research methods and analytical workflows.
• Assist with interpretation of results and preparation of manuscripts, grants, and reports.
Laboratory Operations Management
• Assist the Laboratory Director in overall laboratory operations and workflow coordination.
• Oversee equipment management, maintenance scheduling, and laboratory infrastructure needs.
• Coordinate procurement of supplies and ensure operational readiness of laboratory resources.
• Support development and enforcement of laboratory procedures and best practices.
Financial & Grants Administration
• Support budget development, financial planning, and grant administration activities.
• Monitor grant expenditures and assist with financial tracking and reporting.
• Ensure appropriate use of grant and institutional funds in coordination with the Lab Director and/or PI.
Personnel Support
• Assist the Laboratory Director with supervision and coordination of technical and research staff.
• Support onboarding, training, and performance coordination of lab personnel.
• Contribute to maintaining an organized, productive, and collaborative lab environment.
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
• Assist in ensuring compliance with institutional, regulatory, and research guidelines.
• Support implementation of required training, safety, and operational policies.
• Serve as a liaison to administrative and compliance offices as needed.
Other
• Performs other job-related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- Five years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in Chemistry or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in mass spectrometry operations and data analysis, with a strong focus on proteomics and applications in clinical pathology.
- The ideal candidate is a proactive self-starter who identifies challenges and leads solutions independently. They must collaborate effectively with principal investigators and scientists, contribute to experimental planning, and provide thoughtful input to drive and lead research projects forward.
