Summary
The Center for Comparative Medicine provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals. Under minimal supervision, this position provides routine care and handling of aquatic laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner. Primary working areas include specialized housing, aquatic housing, and biohazard.
Job Duties
- Feeds and waters animals
- Changes animal caging as scheduled, sanitizing rooms, equipment and hallways
- Provides minor treatments to sick or injured animals per veterinary instruction
- Maintains accurate records
- Conducts daily animal health checks
- Ensures that activities are in compliance with AAALAC standards
- Signs multiple husbandry logs to verify task completion in designated areas
- Performs water quality testing and monitors system readings
- Maintains aquatic facility equipment including daily inspections and performs minor preventative maintenance as scheduled
- Maintains live marine feed cultures
- Maintains colony animals including monitoring breeding activities
- Operates tank washing equipment and chemicals
- Performs minor technical manipulations
- Performs other job duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Four years of relevant experience.
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in aquatics is a plus
