Summary
The Intern Aide – Arts in Medicine (AIM) is a paid summer internship opportunity with Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center, designed for students interested in pediatric healthcare, psychosocial services, or the healing power of the arts. This role supports the Periwinkle Arts In Medicine (AIM) Program, which enhances patient and family experiences through creative engagement. The intern will assist with hands-on arts programming, patient interaction, and event support while gaining valuable exposure to patient engagement in a pediatric healthcare setting.
Job Purpose
Provides temporary administrative or laboratory support to a department while gaining practical work experience.
Job Duties
- Assisting with and/or leading arts-based sessions for pediatric patients, including arts and crafts, drawing, painting, music, theater, creative writing, and photography
- Engaging with children of various ages and cultural backgrounds in a compassionate, supportive, and age-appropriate manner
- Demonstrating enthusiasm, sensitivity, and understanding of the emotional and developmental needs of pediatric patients and their families
- Supporting the creation and organization of “Making A Mark” entries and other program-related projects
- Communicating effectively and professionally with AIM staff, patients, siblings, and families
- Assisting with patient and family events and special programming activities
- Cleaning, organizing, and properly storing art supplies and materials after sessions
- Performing basic computer tasks and providing general administrative support as needed
- Performing other duties as assigned to support the goals and operations of the Arts in Medicine program
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in high school, trade/vocational school or higher education institution.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school or college student (undergraduate or graduate preferred), with an academic interest in pediatric healthcare, psychosocial services, creative arts, or a related field
- Interest in pediatric healthcare, psychosocial services, or arts-based programming
- No prior experience required
- Ability to relate to children of various ages and cultural backgrounds
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Enthusiasm for working with children and families in a healthcare environment
- Compassion, patience, and emotional sensitivity
- Interest or participation in creative arts activities
- Basic computer skills and general administrative abilities
