The Department of Human and Molecular Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a PhD-level Instructor, working in the laboratory of Dr. Andrea Ballabio, to investigate lysosomal mechanisms underlying human genetic disease, with a particular focus on inherited kidney cancers and neurodegenerative disorders, and the potential to identify novel therapeutic targets. The laboratory utilizes advanced animal models and state-of-the-art experimental approaches.

Summary

The instructor will lead and support an innovative research program focused on molecular mechanisms underlying dysregulation of lysosomal signaling in inherited kidney cancers and lysosomal dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders.

 

Key responsibilities are design and conduct mechanistic studies using human cellular models, patient-derived samples, mouse models and advanced genomic and biochemical approaches. This role includes developing independent research initiatives, contributing to collaborative translational projects, and presenting findings through peer-reviewed publications and/or conference presentations.

 

The instructor will also assist in grant writing and supervision of laboratory personnel. While the primary emphasis of the position is research, teaching or mentoring responsibilities will also be assigned.

Job Duties

•             Develop and lead independent and collaborative research projects

•             Grant writing

•             Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences

•             Manage research budgets, timelines, and compliance requirements

•             Supervise and mentor research staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and  research assistants

•             Collaborate with faculty and external partners on interdisciplinary research initiatives

•             Ensure compliance with institutional, regulatory, and ethical standards (e.g., IRB, MTA, IACUC, funding agency policies)

•             Participate in research seminars, workshops, and institutional research activities

•             Conduct experiments

Minimum Qualifications

•             Ph.D. in Biomedical discipline

•             Demonstrated record of scholarly productivity (publications, presentations, funded research)

•             Experience in grant writing and research project management
