The Department of Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine provides a great multidisciplinary scientific environment with many collaborative research opportunities. A Student Helper position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Akdes Serin Harmanci, Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Serin Lab focus on developing integrative approaches to dissect the molecular landscape of brain tumors using single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics data. Primary research goal of Serin Lab is to develop novel integrative methods to determine an individual’s unique molecular characteristics and use those genetic features to suggest targetable genes, drugs and treatments specific to each patient.

Job Duties

  • Works on development of methods for analysis of spatial transcriptomics data.
  • Curates and downloads large brain spatial transcriptomics datasets. 
  • Develops statistical methods to perform quality controls and will develop machine learning methods to analyze to dissect the heterogeneity of cell types by integrating image processing and genomics methods. 
  • Downloads and archives large scale imaging data, formulation of the statistical and machine learning methods and implementation of the models by writing the source code and benchmarking the methods with the existing state of the art methods. 
  • Is responsible for writing a paper to describe the method and present the finding.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a High School or College Student (undergraduate or graduate).
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Computer Science or Computational Biology (or related fields), highly motivated.
  • Strong background in programming and machine learning methods.
  • Previous experience in next generation sequencing data
