Professor Opekun's laboratory in the Section of Gastroenterology & Hepatology in the Department of Medicine is looking to temporarily hire a student helper to support our research mission. We are seeking a 4th year undergraduate student transitioning to graduate school who is genuinely interested in biomedical research. Ideal for someone who has a long-term career goal in research or medicine and wants to join an active research team as a part-time student helper/intern. The realm includes studies the role of celiac disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and liver cancer. The position is currently part-time at 4-5 hours/week, with the opportunity to grow.

Job Duties

  • Performs straight forward colorimetric assays and laboratory tasks similar to those learned in undergraduate courses including lab maintenance and organization.
  • Completes data entry.
  • Documents sources in a timely manner.
  • Retrieves specimen as supplied by senior faculty for storage or distribution 5. excellent record keeping and lap notebook.
  • If time allows, the student helper is encouraged to take a more active role in research project discussion, planning, data recording, and learning to do basic presentations that aims for career advancement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a High School or College Student (undergraduate or graduate).
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of the first three year undergraduate studies including College Chemistry for science majors (100/101), basic Microbiology (201), basic college Mathematics, basic college English and Composition (100/101); Freshman Anatomy & Physiology 100/101.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office (excludes ACCESS).
  • Conversational Spanish language skills are essential.
  • Organized, prompt, self-motivated, teamwork, works well with others, multitasking, basic Microsoft computer skills. The employee is expected to advance to another position after mastery of skills learned in this position (6 months).
