Job Purpose

The Westbrook Laboratory is seeking talented and highly motivated geneticist to drive multi-disciplinary scientific programs in the area of synthetic lethality, cancer, and therapeutics.  This position will require specialized knowledge of cutting-edge genetic screening methods, cancer dependency mapping, and the ability to lead pre-clinical programs that may lead to new small molecule drug discovery and / or commercialization opportunities.  Candidates will be expected to articulate high level scientific vision, develop plans to achieve that vision, and mentor other scientists to implement scientific programs.  Candidates will also be expected to be excellent communicators (oral and written).

Job Duties

  • Based on published and private datasets, synthesize high-level scientific vision to discover new vulnerabilities in cancer in the area of synthetic lethality and tissue-specific cancer vulnerabilities.
  • Develop plan for executing multi-disciplinary genetic screening programs, and mentor other scientists within the laboratory.
  • Plans and executes various next-generation sequencing library preparation approaches including shRNA- and sgRNA-amplicon-Seq.
  • Develops workplans for mouse modeling & translational experiments evaluating new or emerging therapeutic modalities.
  • Coordinate team members across multiple disciplines to achieve overall goals.
  • Evaluates and analyzes data associated with assigned experiments.
  • Develops new research approaches and assays for specific research projects.
  • Annotates and maintains protocol repositories for all lab members.
  • Clearly documents and communicates (written and oral) experimental progress and results to principal investigators.
  • Leads in writing scientific publications and grant applications.
  • Assists in the preparation of laboratory reports.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
  • There is periodic exposure to unpleasant conditions but the work is still viewed as relatively comfortable in a laboratory environment.
  • Frequently handles/works with biohazards or risk personal job-related injury typical of an ordinary lab environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree. Experience may not be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Three years of post doctoral research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Substantial expertise in genetic screening technologies for systematic identification and validation of new therapeutic targets  in partnership with internal and external partners.
  • Substantial project leadership and communication with outside partners (academic and biotech).
  • Experience with genetic screens including large-scale cell culture and associated techniques.
  • Experience with general molecular biology, genetic, cell biology, cloning, and biochemistry techniques.
  • Must be capable of managing multiple high-level scientific programs and team members in parallel.
  • PhD in Genetics / Molecular Biology and published experience in Genetics and Cancer Biology.
