Summary

The role of the Senior Simulation Educator is to facilitate simulation-related experiences on behalf of the Baylor Clinical Simulation Core. The Simulation Educator provides clinical, educational, and technical expertise in the development, implementation, and evaluation of formative and summative assessment initiatives using simulation methodologies. In addition, the Simulation Educator collaborates with others to facilitate curriculum development and program evaluation. This individual acts as the on-site department representative during simulation sessions by supporting faculty, staff, and students with simulation needs (simulation equipment, medical supplies, and Standardized Patients (SP).

 

This position supervises Standardized Patients (SPs), Proctors, and Physical Exam Patients (contract employees with ICAs) that are hired and trained to perform simulated patient roles, assess learners performance and provide written and verbal feedback to learners. Regular performance evaluations are conducted and immediate intervention is expected if performance or professionalism issues arise.

 

Works with School of Medicine CREW and Graduate Medical Education (GME) faculty and simulation team to design and administer procedural skills simulations based on current training methodology to ensure learners are trained and assessed appropriately. Activities include the implementation of standardized faculty-led orientation and debriefing sessions for learners, progression of competency development documentation, and final check-off competency assessments.

 

This position is eligible to work hybrid within the Greater Houston, TX area.

Job Duties

  • Organizes and oversees GME and SOM CREW faculty development and provides assistance and training to faculty for the design and delivery of effective instruction through innovative technology.
  • Develops and reviews learner pre and post-self-assessment surveys of educational exercises and prepares learner summary reports to assist with competency assessment readiness. Provides GME and SOM CREW faculty with learner performance data utilized to develop independent learning plans.
  • Supports Simulation Managers with scheduling of educational and assessment activities by collaborating with departmental faculty to identify learner availability, equipment and material requirements, and lab space availability in collaboration with the simulation team.
  • Assists with on-site administration of procedural skills training and assessment activities for GME and SOM CREW, helping to ensure event is delivered according to educational and assessment goals and objectives.
  • Assists in the administration of high-stakes, multi-station procedural skills events, including managing all aspects related to the training and assessment of learners, training SPs, on-site coordination and supervision of SPs, and conducting real-time observation and evaluation of competency training and assessment activities for GME and SOM CREW.
  • Assesses and supervises the performance of SPs to assure quality and adherence to program regulations and case standards with regard to role portrayal, student assessment, and appropriateness of verbal feedback to students.
  • Assists in the process of hiring people to serve as SPs based on specified case criteria such as age, gender, and culture.
  • Provides technical support to GME and SOM CREW faculty, staff and students for on-line teaching and learning tools related to innovative curricula delivery.
  • Researches, evaluates, and identifies innovative learning methods and instructional technology. Evaluates assessment methods across all GME and SOM CREW simulation events for valid, adequate, and reliable standards.
  • Collaborates with Educator colleagues to develop and maintain a learner curriculum portal (ex-Blackboard).
  • Coordinates timelines and work plans for simulation curriculum development and implementation, annual reviews, revision, and course evaluations. Provides coaching and mentoring to Educator I, and II by sharing simulation education and experience to grow their competencies.
  • Represents Baylor at professional conferences and presents workshops that highlight current practices utilized in the Baylor Clinical Simulation Center. Tracks all scholarly activity.
  • Assists with administrative support duties, which may include calendar management, answering and screening incoming calls, prepare administrative documents, and order supplies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Health, Allied Health/Health Sciences, Health Care Administration, Training and Development or related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE). 
  • Advanced Practice or Health professions degrees/certifications.
  • Eight years of relevant experience with medical procedures, simulation and/or Graduate Medical Education.
