Summary
Serves as a strategic partner in supporting Cancer Center research operations, infrastructure, and resource planning. Coordinates governance and planning for research resources, including space, equipment, contracts, and other operational needs, to support Cancer Center priorities. Works closely with Core Lab leadership, Cancer Center faculty, and institutional partners to assess research needs, evaluate feasibility, and coordinate solutions that support research growth and capacity. Leads support for research start-ups, operational planning, and cross functional research initiatives across the Cancer Center.
Cancer Center Lab Operations & Resource Planning – 40%
- Leads and oversees Cancer Center laboratory operations and resource planning across BCM and TCH, including laboratory space, equipment, contracts, and operational needs.
- Leads the development and implementation of processes that support effective laboratory operations, resource utilization, compliance, and long-term research capacity.
- Oversees equipment inventories, audits, contracts, and related operational activities across BCM and TCH.
- Provides direction and subject matter expertise for laboratory space planning, set-up, moves, and modifications.
- Leads feasibility assessments and resource planning in partnership with faculty, laboratory leadership, and institutional stakeholders.
- Oversees capital equipment requests and coordinates procurement, installation, and associated operational requirements.
- Monitors equipment-related operating expenses and contracts and works with administrative partners to address budgetary and operational needs.
- Supports faculty and research staff onboarding by coordinating laboratory space, equipment, and other research infrastructure requirements.
Core Lab Partnership & Governance – 20%
- Leads cross-functional coordination with Core Lab leadership and faculty to support effective operations and alignment with Cancer Center research priorities.
- Provides operational leadership and subject matter expertise for Core Lab planning, resource needs, workflows, and service requirements.
- Supports governance processes for Core Lab operations and facilitates consistent decision-making across faculty, laboratory, and administrative stakeholders.
- Oversees operational metrics, including revenue, expenses, billing, purchasing, and other measures of Core Lab performance, in partnership with appropriate administrative teams.
- Leads resolution of operational, billing, procurement, and workflow issues and coordinates escalations as needed.
- Participates in Core Lab planning and governance meetings and facilitates communication between Core Lab leadership, faculty, and administrative stakeholders.
- Serves as a resource to PIs and research teams regarding Core Lab services, resources, and operational needs.
Kinder Cancer Center Strategic Planning & Operations – 15%
- Leads and participates in strategic and operational planning related to KCCC laboratory operations, research infrastructure, and future capacity.
- Provides expertise and recommendations regarding laboratory operations, regulatory requirements, compliance, and resource planning.
- Evaluates laboratory infrastructure, workflows, and resource utilization to identify opportunities for process improvement and increased research capacity.
- Leads or supports special projects and initiatives that advance KCCC laboratory operations and research priorities.
- Coordinates implementation of approved operational initiatives across relevant stakeholders.
Research Vision Program & Research Lab Start-Up – 15%
- Leads coordination of laboratory start-up planning for incoming faculty, including space, equipment, infrastructure, and operational needs.
- Evaluates available resources and identifies gaps or requirements associated with faculty research start-up.
- Leads coordination of capital equipment procurement and required space changes or modifications in partnership with faculty, division administrators, and institutional stakeholders.
- Develops and maintains start-up equipment plans, budgets, and associated expenses.
- Provides cost, resource, and utilization assessments for proposed capital equipment, including potential return on investment.
- Coordinates with division and administrative leadership to monitor start-up expenditures and ensure appropriate use of funding.
- Supports compliance with grant, gift, and restricted funding requirements related to research start-up.
Cancer Center Operations & Citizenship – 10%
- Leads development and implementation of standard operating procedures, workflows, and operational guidelines as needed.
- Identifies and implements process improvements to promote efficiency, consistency, and effective coordination across research operations.
- Develops and supports operational infrastructure, documentation, and communication processes that facilitate long-term research growth.
- Leads or participates in Cancer Center committees, special projects, and cross-functional initiatives.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Four years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in basic science.
- Master's degree in basic science or business.
- Laboratory Experience – overall laboratory experience, including 3 years of experience in flow cytometry and/or biobanking laboratory environments.
- Laboratory Operations & Start-Up Experience – Experience supporting or leading laboratory start-up operations, including establishing workflows, processes, infrastructure, and operational standards.
- Project Management & Organizational Skills – Strong project management, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and cross-functional activities.
- Budget Management – Experience developing, managing, and monitoring laboratory budgets and resources.
- Disease Knowledge – Knowledge and experience working with hematologic and oncologic diseases.
- Technical & Administrative Proficiency – Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
