Summary

This highly interactive lab focuses on how carotenoids, a class of colorful compounds in fruits and vegetables, are absorbed and metabolized, impact cancer prevention, and promote maternal and child health. Job tasks will include working with biologic materials (human cell lines, blood, and tissues), transgenic mice, analytical chemistry of carotenoids and other dietary compounds (extractions and HPLC), and molecular biology lab analyses (PCR, qRT-PCR, Western blotting, genotyping) under established procedures to assure personal and lab safety. Experience and comprehension of any or all of these techniques is prioritized.

Job Duties
  • Plan, direct, and conduct research experiments.
  • Collect, compile, evaluate, and analyze data.
  • Develop research techniques and perform applications required for specific research projects.
  • Assist in manuscript and grant preparation as needed.
  • Conduct literature searches and summarize information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Document results of experiments in lab notebooks and maintain appropriate electronic documentation.
  • Select, evaluate, apply, and troubleshoot techniques used in routine research.
  • Oversee lab inventory management system.
  • Maintain lab safety compliance records.
  • Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Train and orient less experienced research staff.
  • May supervise, schedule, and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
  • Required: Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field.
Experience:
  • Required: Four years of relevant experience.
Certification/Licenses/
Registration:
  • None required.
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
  • Preferred: Master's degree in a related field.
Other
  • Some lab experience and interest in nutrition is a plus.
  • Must have excellent organizational, time-management, and interpersonal skills, and will be self-motivated, reliable, efficient, methodical, and show an attention to detail.  Work effectively on a team and have a zest for project management.
  • Need to be able to work independently and follow both oral and written instructions.
