Working with a well-established, Harris Health-based team of SBIRT specialists, the Senior Medical Social Worker will provide virtual, motivational interviewing-based brief intervention services to patients discharged from Ben Taub or LBJ hospital prior to receiving an SBIRT intervention by the inpatient SBIRT specialists, and also provide linkage to substance use disorder community treatment services to patients the inpatient SBIRT team have seen and found to both need and want SUD treatment.  The Senior Medical Social Worker's efforts will provide needed enhancement of existing services.

Job Duties

  • Serves as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, implementing coordinated care plans based on individualized need.
  • Collaborates with medical providers and frontlines SBIRT specialists to follow up with patients needing referral to substance use treatment services to ensure linkage to appropriate treatment and with patients not able to engage initial SBIRT services while inpatient via telehealth.
  • Incorporates cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal and case management domains.
  • Uses Motivational Interviewing modality in interactions with patients. 
  • Participates in scheduled trainings and meetings, as necessary. 
  • Participates in program data collection and submission as needed to meet project goals. 
  • Maintains records and completes appropriate documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Social Work from a school approved by the Council on Social Work Education.
  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Licensure as a Master Social Worker (LMSW) by The Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners (TSBSWE).
