Summary

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery (DoS) is recruiting a Senior Business Operations Manager to serve as Division Administrator for both the Division of General Thoracic Surgery and the Division of Vascular Surgery (19 staff members) and will be expected to lead these divisions by managing the day-to-day business operations. This role will perform and implement key financial and human resource activities with frequent reporting to the DoS Chairman, DoS Administrator, and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center leadership. The candidate will also be responsible for managing the divisions’ professional level staff and will collaborate with BSLMC leadership to implement process improvement in the inpatient setting. This position will also lead internal business development and marketing efforts for the Thoracic and Vascular Divisions and oversee additional projects to promote growth. This position requires an individual who is highly organized, has experience managing diverse stakeholder groups, and provides high quality communication to all team members. In addition, the selected individual will serve as higher administrative authority for our Global Surgery program, partnering with the faculty director responsible for the development and support of the global (primarily international) surgical programs.

 

This is a growth opportunity for a candidate with a practice management background.  The chosen candidate will need a strong financial and operations skill set to provide faculty with excellent customer service in the clinical, research, and education mission areas. High acumen in process improvement is preferred to increase productivity and patient satisfaction in assigned hospital-based clinics. Consistent, clear communication is required and the ability to quickly re-prioritize work assignments and multitask as needed.

Job Duties

  • Serve as Administrator for the Division of General Thoracic Surgery which includes day to day business operations for the educational, research, and clinical aspects of the division. (25%)
  • Serve as Administrator for the Division of Vascular Surgery which includes administrative oversight of the day to day business operations of the division. (15%)
  • Serve as Administrator for Global Surgery, providing administrative oversight, participating in strategic development and virtual support for international operations. (15%)
  • Manage professional level staff and Advanced Practice Providers by establishing and defining work responsibilities, setting performance development plans, conducting performance evaluations, and addressing HR-related issues (including hiring, terminations, salary adjustments, and disciplinary actions). (15%)
  • Oversee financial operations for the General Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Divisions including productivity reporting, budget implementation, forecasting, processing supplemental payments, and collaborating with Department leadership to promote revenue growth and control expenses. (15%)
  • Implement quality improvement practices in outpatient clinics to increase patient volumes and efficient throughput and work with clinical staff to develop standard operating procedures to create a uniform and positive patient experience across all clinics. (5%)
  • Partner with faculty to ensure College revenue cycle goals are met by implementing process improvement for obtaining insurance authorizations and timely closure of clinic and operative notes to maximize the net collection rate and minimize denials, bad debt, and outstanding A/R for surgical cases and clinical activity at BSLMC. (5%) 
  • Serve as Administrator for Lung Institute which requires collaboration between Department of Surgery and Department of Medicine leadership to ensure pulmonary, thoracic surgery, and lung transplant patient care is coordinated in an efficient manner. (5%)
  • Additional projects may include working alongside Service Line Director or Division Chief to complete BSLMC, College, and Department initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience in financial operations.
