The Human Genome Sequencing Center at the Baylor College of Medicine is currently seeking a Senior IT Project Management Associate to work closely with stakeholders and development teams to translate research and clinical requirements to software applications and pipelines. In addition this role will provide direction on project management and implementation activities for clinical systems related to the clinical practice.


As a member of the HGSC Software Engineering team, you will directly contribute to the HGSC’s pioneering clinical and research initiatives. The many well-defined and funded HGSC projects offer our talented staff the freedom to innovate and the satisfaction of delivering actionable results. Although a software engineering and biology background is not required for this position, an interest in software development and human genetics is important.

Job Purpose

Performs project management and implementations activities for IT projects, including scope definitions, developing project plans, vendor selections, and resource management.

Job Duties

  • Analyze, plan and develop requirements and technical specifications for clinical and research projects.
  • Demonstrate up-to-date expertise in software and systems and apply this to the development, execution and improvement of business and customer needs.
  • Analyze project goals and create project plans to track development of software engineering components and to ensure that implementation and prescribed activities are carried out in accordance with specified objectives.
  • Assign and oversee the daily tasks of technical personnel while ensuring all team members are actively working toward established milestones.
  • Hold regular technical team meetings to determine progress and address any questions or challenges regarding projects.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain appropriate policies and procedures to track and manage the SDLC for projects.
  • Manage technical, testing and process documentation.
  • Manage training, technical support and operations of ongoing applications as required.
  • Provides direction on project management and implementation activities related to the implementation of clinical systems data. Accountable for successful project outcome.
  • Facilitates communication with Baylor clinical staff and Baylor affiliated institutions related to assessing and defining operational workflow, system requirements and solutions. Provides clinical systems  expertise, training, and other support as needed.
  • Designs, develops and maintains custom clinical content for the practice management system, electronic medical records system or the interface engine application software as assigned.
  • Provides in-depth analysis, validation and correction of data within clinical applications including EMR, EMPI, Interface Engine application and associated modules as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.  Four years of relevant experience may substitute for degree requirement. 
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of business analysis processes, tools, strategies and methods
  • Demonstrated understanding of software development and SDLC methodologies such as Agile Scrum
  • Experience working in a high-level collaborative environment and promoting a teamwork mentality
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills and experience establishing guidelines in these areas for others
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to listen and ask appropriate questions and take initiative with great attention to detail
  • Strong sense of personal accountability regarding decision-making and supervising department teams
  • Experience working with developers and testing software
  • Managerial experience applying analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with use of diagramming tools such as LucidChart or MS Visio
  • Proficiency with use of SQL or other data analysis platforms preferred
  • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and programs including word processing, outlook, spreadsheets, and graphics
