The General Thoracic Division of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine seeks a Patient Support Services Senior Coordinator to coordinate patient surgery schedules, pre-operative testing and procedures, monitor patient financial clearance, and optimize block schedule usage. This position will proactively communicate any challenges or delays to the patient or provider to avoid unnecessary delay or cancellation of care. 


This position will be part of a team that provides the primary surgery scheduling support for a busy Thoracic Surgery practice. The ideal candidate will be able to seamlessly interact and influence the workflow by collaborating with hospital operating room staff to efficiently schedule the appropriate rooms for each surgical case. A high level of organizational skill, strong attention to detail, and an ability to see each task through to completion is essential for success in this role. The candidate should possess a willingness to take ownership and be accountable for their work.

Job Duties

  • Coordinates with Baylor St. Luke's Medical center and diagnostic imaging facility staff to schedule patient surgeries, tests, and procedures.
  • Communicates pre-operative instructions and requirements for medical clearance.
  • Coordinates financial clearance and addresses insurance authorization delays regarding surgeries or procedures.
  • Compiles medical records and insurance information for surgical appointments.
  • Develops and implements patient registration and scheduling guidelines.
  • Provides administrative support for physicians as needed, including active communication regarding any changes in patient financial or testing status that will impact treatment timelines.
  • Works closely with physicians, clinic, and support staff to optimize OR block time usage.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience scheduling surgeries in a busy practice.
  • Proficient with EPIC.
