Summary

The Senior Commercialization and Technology Management Associate - Therapeutics plays a critical role in advancing innovative therapeutics from discovery to commercialization by partnering with faculty innovators to evaluate, protect, and develop Baylor College of Medicine intellectual property. The position leads commercialization activities across a diverse portfolio of therapeutic technologies, including small molecules, biologics, vaccines, immunotherapies, and cell and gene therapies, while developing licensing, startup, and industry partnership opportunities. This Senior role collaborates with researchers, investors, industry partners, and legal counsel to drive intellectual property strategy, negotiate commercialization agreements, and support translational development efforts. As a senior member of the team, the role also provides mentorship to junior staff and contributes to strategic initiatives that advance the innovation and commercialization mission of the BCM Innovation Institute (BCMII).  The ideal candidate should possess excellent communication, negotiation, relationship management, analytical, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage a complex portfolio of technologies and collaborate effectively with faculty, industry partners, investors, and legal counsel. 

Job Duties

Technology Evaluation and Commercialization Strategy (30%)

• Independently manages a portfolio of therapeutic technologies arising from Baylor College of Medicine research programs.
• Evaluates invention disclosures, conducts market and competitive assessments, recommends intellectual property protection strategies, and develops commercialization plans.
• Works closely with faculty innovators to identify licensing, translational development, and startup formation opportunities that maximize the potential impact and value of institutional innovations.

Business Development and Industry Engagement (25%)

• Develops and executes outreach strategies to identify and engage biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical organizations, investors, entrepreneurs, and other commercial partners.
• Prepares technology marketing materials, presents opportunities to external stakeholders, and cultivates relationships that facilitate licensing transactions, sponsored research collaborations, and startup creation.
• Represents BCM Innovation Institute at industry meetings, conferences, and partnering events to expand Baylor's commercialization network and opportunities.

Agreement Negotiation and Licensing Management (20%)

• Leads the negotiation, drafting, and execution of licensing and commercialization-related agreements, including license agreements, option agreements, confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements, and inter-institutional agreements.
• Develops business and financial terms appropriate to the stage of technology development and coordinates with faculty, legal counsel, and external partners to facilitate complex commercialization transactions.

Intellectual Property Portfolio Management (10%)

• Collaborates with inventors, external patent counsel, and Baylor's Office of General Counsel to develop and manage intellectual property portfolios.
• Oversees patent filing and prosecution activities, evaluates patentability and competitive positioning, monitors critical deadlines, and provides strategic recommendations regarding continuation, expansion, licensing, or discontinuation of patent assets.

Post-Agreement Compliance and Portfolio Oversight (5%)

• Monitors active agreements to ensure compliance with diligence obligations, reporting requirements, financial commitments, and development milestones.
• Supports royalty administration, revenue management, and compliance activities associated with federal, state, sponsor, and institutional requirements.
• Maintains accurate records and contributes to institutional reporting and benchmarking 

Faculty Relationship Management (5%)

• Serves as a trusted advisor to faculty innovators by providing guidance on intellectual property, commercialization strategy, licensing, and industry engagement.
• Communicates complex scientific, legal, and business concepts in a clear and practical manner and promotes faculty participation throughout the commercialization process.

Leadership, Mentorship, and Strategic Initiatives (5%)

• Provides mentorship and guidance to junior commercialization professionals, fellows, and trainees.
• Contributes to process improvement initiatives, departmental strategic planning, and special projects that advance the mission of the BCM Innovation Institute.
• Supports organizational goals related to technology transfer, startup formation, industry engagement, and commercialization outcomes. 
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
   

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree. 
• Four years of relevant experience. 

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree (M.S., MBA, Ph.D., J.D., or equivalent)
• Experience in academic technology transfer, biotechnology, pharmaceutical business development, licensing, or related commercialization activities is preferred, with demonstrated success evaluating technologies, developing commercialization strategies, and negotiating licensing transactions.
• Strong knowledge of therapeutic development, intellectual property strategy, licensing, business development, and technology commercialization is preferred, including familiarity with biologics, small molecules, vaccines, immunotherapies, and cell and gene therapies.
