The Bioinformatics Research Laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a skilled software developer with a background in bioinformatics, genomics, or genetics. Put your knowledge of the field and enthusiasm for programming by joining our team and participating in our groundbreaking research projects. You will contribute software solutions in support of high impact National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded projects, with a focus on implementing web services, automating data processing pipelines, and developing or extending data repositories. Ideally, you already have NodeJS experience or are willing to prove you can become capable quickly. Your experience in other languages is a plus, although prior Ruby/Rails experience gives you an advantage. You should be comfortable developing for the front- and back-end, as well as being self-motivated to learn about and incorporate new technologies or tools. You have experience working with databases (relational, NoSQL, or graph) and are familiar with a range of tools and data sites relevant to the field of genomics.

Job Duties

  • Design, implement, test, and debug novel information systems for handling genomics-related data.
  • Maintain extend, and integrate existing software systems and automated data pipelines.
  • Integrate existing bioinformatics software with lab software services and data flows.
  • Advise and educate teams members about efficient application of proposed software solutions.
  • Work with biologist and genomicist stakeholders to establish requirements and specifications for novel software or extensions.
  • Support end-users and fellow developers by authoring documentation, as well as following collaboration standard practices.
  • Present and discuss requirements, specifications, backend and UI designs, create necessary test data, test software, and prepare documentation.
  • Contribute to and use shared object-oriented code libraries.
  • Functional familiarity with standard web technologies such as Ajax, CSS, HTML, REST APIs, JSON.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Biological Science, or a related field.
  • Three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biological Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • High skill level in modern 3rd generation programming languages such as ES6, Ruby, Python, or Java; a clear ability to parlay those skills to NodeJS development.
  • Knowledge and experience with development, compilation, and deployment in a GNU/Linux server environment.
  • Some experience with Ruby, including Rails, is a plus.
  • Experience authoring web API services and front-ends, such as Vue or web components, is an advantage.
  • Experience with document, graph, and relational databases is an advantage, as is experience with message queues.
  • Has experience with good software engineering practices, with designing and developing software solutions to specifications and according to local standards and practices, with the use of version control systems, and with the use of integrated development environments (IDEs).
