Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor) in Houston, TX is seeking a dynamic, collaborative educational leader to serve as the Senior Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official (Sr. Asso. Dean/DIO).  The Sr. Asso. Dean/DIO, in collaboration with the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC,) has authority and responsibility for the oversight of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency and fellowship programs, and for the Texas Medical Board (TMB) approved fellowship programs.

This is a 1.0 FTE administrative appointment with 80% time expected in GME and 20% time in clinical or medical education research or teaching activities. As a member of the faculty, the Sr. Asso. Dean/DIO will be expected to engage in the educational, research or clinical practice missions based on credentials, experience and aspirations.

The successful applicant must have demonstrated expertise in administrative and educational leadership, a passion for educational excellence, and a proven track record in graduate medical education including effective program management and performance improvement.  The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in mentoring and leading teams, expertise in educational program development and assessment, and as well a commitment to innovation in medical education. The Sr. Asso. Dean/DIO reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves as a member of the Dean’s leadership team.

Job Responsibilities:

The Sr. Asso. Dean/DIO is responsible for ensuring compliance with ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements (i.e., common and specialty-/subspecialty-specific), ACGME Policies and Procedures, Baylor’s policies and procedures, and GME related accreditation standards of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME).  The Sr. Asso. Dean/DIO, in collaboration with the GMEC, Baylor leaders, and leaders across affiliate sites, oversees the quality of the clinical learning and working environments, and helps to facilitate continuous performance improvement to enhance health care quality and safety, wellness, and readiness of graduates for clinical practice. The Sr. Asso. Dean/DIO provides oversight of the Graduate Medical Education Office, deans and staff. 

Job Qualifications:
  • M.D./D.O. degree with board certification in their specialty and eligible for a TX medical license and/or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
  • Demonstrated a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness in leadership and possess the ability to work with a varied group of educators and stakeholders
  • Minimum of five (5) years of previous leadership experience in GME (e.g., DIO, Assistant/Associate DIO, or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 5 years previous graduate medical education experience with particular emphasis in program and curriculum development, assessment, and continuous program quality improvement
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills including building and leading team
  • Exemplary professionalism and a results orientation
  • Demonstrated leadership and management competencies
