Summary

Seeking experienced Lab Animal Behavior Specialist to join the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.  The individual will oversee the Behavioral Management Program, which will include close interaction with Clinical Veterinarians and Lab Animal Staff in CCM. Successful candidates will have familiarity with positive reinforcement training of research or domestic animals, social and pair housing of a variety of species, and knowledge of non-human primate and other large animal species behavior in a laboratory animal setting.  This position will be most suitable for a candidate with prior experience in design, performance and analysis of research studies evaluating the impact of novel enrichment/housing, positive reinforcement training, and/or social housing on individual animal welfare, scientific reproducibility and/or operational objectives.

Job Purpose
Job Duties
  • Develops, implements, and trains husbandry and veterinary staff on standard operating procedures and policies with regards to social housing, species-specific normal behaviors, positive reinforcement training, and provision of novel enrichment/housing.
  • Organizes and performs duties such as the ordering, preparation, maintenance and distribution of enrichment materials, devices, and equipment.
  • Works with veterinary staff to develop and maintain socially housed animals within project requirements which includes initial behavioral assessments and as needed further evaluations.
  • Works with veterinary staff to identify, evaluate, treat and support any animal displaying abnormal behaviors.
  • Provides positive reinforcement training to individual animals to support basic clinical care in addition to research objectives.

 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education Required: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience Required: Four years of relevant experience.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: None Required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree
  • Prior experience in design, performance and analysis of retrospective and/or prospective studies evaluating the impacts of novel enrichment/housing, positive reinforcement training, and/or social housing on individual animal welfare, scientific reproducibility, and/or operational objectives.
  • Experience in positive reinforcement training of research or domestic animals and knowledge of non-human primate behavior and other large animal research species in a laboratory animal setting.
  • Proficient with MS office software (i.e. Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with a wide variety of personnel.
