Summary

The Department of School of Health Professions is currently seeking an Assistant Professor.

Job Duties

The Faculty in Orthotics and Prosthetics, is a board-certified clinician in Orthotics/Prosthetics licensed and eligible to practice in the State of Texas. This individual participates in the organization, administration, planning, and evaluation of the 30-month program leading to a Master of Science degree. The core and specific administrative, instructional management, evaluation, research, and service duties of the position are listed below.

 

Core Responsibilities: As a core faculty member of the OP Program, this individual will participate in all of the following activities in the routine course of his/her duties:

  • Serve as a student advisor providing guidance and mentorship to students in all phases of training regarding their academic performance and professional development
  • Serve as a secondary or primary mentor for student's work to fulfill the Master's thesis requirement
  • Develop and deliver lectures, laboratory, and small group interactive sessions based on program needs and individual faculty experience and expertise
  • Participate in routine testing of OP student competencies including the roles of proctor, didactic test item writer, test reviewer, skills grader, and skills test writer
  • Attend and evaluate lectures, laboratory and small group sessions for purposes of quality control and evaluation
  • Recruit, screen and evaluate candidates for admission to the OP Program
  • Participating in periodic self-study and site visit activities required to maintain Program accreditation
  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities to maintain clinical competence, licensure, and to improve personal skills as an educator and a clinician
  • Engage in grant writing and implementation, original research, professional presentations, and publications
  • Serve on school and college committees

Administration:

·    Serve as an advocate for the OP Program

·    Participate in budgetary matters related to the OP program

·    Maintain administrative files regarding curriculum, students, and other program activities

·    Serve as a liaison between the OP program and various administrative offices of the college where requested

·    Provide guidance and referral services to OP students regarding academic matters

·    Counsel potential employers and program graduates regarding employment opportunities

·    Promote the OP program to career advisors and students at undergraduate institutions, as well as members of the general public

·    Advise potential applicants regarding admissions requirements

·    Assist other OP faculty through the process of professional development

Job Duties Continue

Instructional Management: The responsibilities of the faculty instructor include these items listed below in addition to those additional management roles identified by the program director.  

 

  • Work with Administrative Coordinators, the Program Director and the Associate Director in the development and scheduling of didactic core coursework, clinical assessments, critical thinking sessions, and skills testing sessions
  • Collaborate with administrative coordinators in the preparation of memos, letters, schedules, testing periods, course evaluations, and reports as pertaining to assigned didactic portions of the program
  • Work with Program Director and other faculty to assess core curriculum and clinical rotations with frequency.  
  • Assist Program Director in collection, analysis, and maintenance of appropriate data to evaluate program quality on an on-going basis

·    Serve as course director for a minimum of 2-3 courses as assigned by Program Director during the didactic year, with responsibilities to review and update objectives, develop new content, prepare skill assessments, assign student grades, and review course evaluation data.

  • Work with clinical phase team to carry out activities to orient mentors and students for entry to the clinical phase of their training.
  • Serve as a course director for clinical curriculum

 

Evaluation: The faculty member will participate in the evaluation of assigned curriculum against national standards and OP practice and may be asked to present those findings at the semiannual faculty retreat.   Additional responsibilities include:

 

  • Participating in administration of standardized exams
  • Work with the education team to assess the effectiveness of the curriculum in preparing students for clinical rotations and for practice
  • Participate in the review of ABC certification exam data, and clinical readiness exam data in preparation for annual faculty retreat

 

Research: The responsibilities of faculty members related to scholarship, include the following:

 

·    Participate in research activities in collaboration with other Baylor faculty members and outside professionals

·    Participating in grant proposal development seeking funds to support development projects

·    Make scholarly contributions to peer-reviewed education and health-related literature

 

Service: Along with the above responsibilities, it is expected that the faculty member will: 

 

·    Provide service to the College as requested, i.e. committee and task force assignments

·    Provide clinical service as appropriate to expertise, experience, and time availability

·    Participate in the activities of local, state, and national professional organizations

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in orthotics and prosthetics or related field
  • Certification in prosthetics and orthotics from the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics
  • Eligibility for licensure as a prosthetist and/or orthotist in the state of Texas
