Performs responsible research work of a complex nature that requires establishing test methods and procedures as well as planning, completing, and occasionally supervising limited research projects in accordance with general plans approved by the supervisor.  Perform the testing on study test samples, interpret test results, monitor assay performance, enter data into laboratory database and prepare result reports using PCR and RT PCR techniques.

All activities will be done as part of a 1- to 2-person team. Specifically each individual will set up RNA extraction of samples using sophisticated and automated equipment for SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing. The duties involve extraction and PCR testing of large volume of clinical samples, hence the person should be methodical and meticulous. The technician will be responsible for ensuring that proper samples and appropriate controls are used in the testing batches and the equipment is functioning appropriately. All samples tested need to be verified and tracked in the laboratory database.  Inventory tracking and equipment maintenance will also be part of the lab duties.

Will perform RNA extraction and PCR testing of hundreds of clinical samples for SARS-CoV-2 in a safe and efficient manner.

Excellent communication skills and team work is required for working in this highly dynamic position. Also the work will require flexible work schedules with rotating weekend coverage.

The job involves alternating 8 hour work schedule, where if a team is assigned to the 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. schedule the following week the team is assigned to the 1:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. work schedule. This is done to ensure equitability in the work schedule and so that the samples are processed for PCR testing in a timely manner.

Job Duties
  • Plans and conducts testing on study samples.
  • Extracts and PCR testing of large volume of clinical samples
  • Ensures proper samples and appropriate controls are used in testing batches and the equipment is functioning appropriately
  • Verifies and tracks samples in laboratory database
  • Evaluates and analyzes data
  • Monitors assay performance
  • Conducts experiments to support the Molecular Diagnostic Unit
  • Documents results of experiments and reports to principal investigators
  • Enters data in laboratory database
  • Trains and orients less experienced research staff
  • Assists with the QA/QC program and preparing for site visits
  • Oversees the maintenance of lab equipment and environment
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education Required: Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Experience Required: One year of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Must be methodical and meticulous
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Must work as a team with other persons performing similar activities
  • Three or more years of relevant lab experience and working with clinical samples
  • Master's degree in a related field
