Summary

The Ramani Lab at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a Research Technician III. This laboratory performs translational research related to gastrointestinal (GI) viruses. We are seeking an experienced Research Technician to work primarily on projects related to rotavirus vaccine failure in children. The studies will involve evaluation of rotavirus vaccine infections in human intestinal organoid cultures. The research technician will also assist in the overall running and organization of the lab, perform a variety of experimental techniques under general supervision and support postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in their focused research projects. The successful candidate will benefit from working in a rich and stimulating research environment and be part of a group that nurtures a team science approach to enteric infectious diseases. 

Job Duties

  • Performs mammalian/organoid cell culture.
  • Grows and maintains virus stocks.
  • Performs experiments using molecular biology and virology technologies such as infectivity assays, qRT-PCR, immunofluorescence assays and ELISA.
  • Maintains lab supplies and inventory (ordering, stocking, preparing solutions/media).
  • Maintains detailed laboratory notebook and updating reagent catalogs for the lab.
  • Maintains general lab environment, including, but not limited to, equipment maintenance and repairs, organization, and cleanliness of the lab.
  • Participates in lab meetings and reads applicable literature.
  • Prepares figures and assists in writing related to experiments performed.
  • Maintains and ensures compliance with biosafety and laboratory regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a Biomedical Science or in a related field with 1-2 years of research experience.
  • Experience in molecular biology, excellent aseptic techniques and general skills common to a microbiology lab are a must. 
  • A strong preference will be given for experience in virology research and PCR.
  • Excellent documentation and organizational skills with the ability to keep accurate records of all work performed.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new techniques with instruction.
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic, including ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, use good judgment and complete duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team members.
