Summary

Seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and organized technician to join a research team focused on understanding the genetics and pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. The technician will participate in studies directed by Dr. Joshua Shulman in the  Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases. The research integrates experimental genetic approaches using both fruit fly (Drosophila) and cell culture models of disease, as well as direct study of human subject cohorts. The research technician will assist members of the research team to conduct experiments. Technician will be additionally responsible for the handling and processing of human subject data. The technician will perform additional duties related to the ongoing research efforts of the laboratory. Excellent time management, communication and organizational skills are essential to collect, analyze and appropriately document experimental results. Training in specialized research methods will be provided. Research Technician II will become an active member of a research team investigating neurodegenerative diseases, that includes Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Provides responsible technical assistance in support of research projects by completing assignments requiring a basic knowledge of fundamental techniques and practices related to neurology and genetics, working under minimal supervision by a higher-level research staff member.

Job Duties

  • Helps prepare and perform research experiments.
  • Handles and processes human subject data.
  • Evaluates and analyzes data and document results.
  • Provides technical assistance in support of research projects by completing assignments requiring a basic knowledge of fundamental techniques and practices related to neurology and genetics.
  • Performs routine genetic, biochemical, and molecular biology techniques that includes cell culture, Western blotting, ELISA, and DNA cloning. Performs fruit fly genetic experiments that includes assisting with upkeep of fly stocks. 
  • Prepares and manages DNA sample. 
  • Coordinate and triages requests for biological specimen (saliva, blood) or tests from investigators. 
  • Maintains detailed records of research activities that includes study protocols, records of subject enrollment and sample collection.   
  • Conducts literature searches and summarizes information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and equipment.  
  • Assists with cleaning, and maintaining the laboratory area in a neat orderly condition.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of related research experience preferred.
