The Tran lab is seeking a motivated and organized person interested in characterizing mouse models of neurodegeneration in the visual system. The successful candidate will receive direct training from the PI to work independently and contribute to a series of projects that will elucidate basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and identify potential new genetic targets for therapy. The technician will gain broad research experience in mouse husbandry, colony management, phenotyping, animal surgery, and molecular neurobiology.

Job Duties

  • Prepare and conduct laboratory research experiments.
  • Maintain an organized electronic lab notebook.
  • Perform animal husbandry, weanings, euthanasia as needed.
  • Perform survival surgeries for mouse models of optic nerve injury and experimental glaucoma.
  • Perform mouse genotyping.
  • Maintain accurate animal husbandry and genotyping records.
  • Harvest tissues for immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization.
  • Assist lab personnel a variety of molecular biology approaches including DNA, RNA and protein isolation, RT-PCR, and RNA sequencing.
  • Monitor and order lab supplies and reagents as needed.
  • Perform assigned general laboratory chores.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with mice or rodents
  • Experience in histology and working with DNA/RNA a plus
