Summary

The long-term Research Technician II position is available immediately within the Human Stem Cell and Neuronal Differentiation Core at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. The technician will have a minimum of Bachelor’s in basic or medical science, experience in cell culture, preferably with embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells, and basic molecular biology techniques. The lab is seeking a motivated individual to conduct day-to-day research in a highly collaborative team supporting a variety of projects using human models of disease.

The core facility is part of BCM Advanced Technology Cores and is located at the Neurological Research Institute of the Texas Children's Hospital, a multidisciplinary and extremely dynamic research environment with state-of-art infrastructure. This is a research staff position for an Institutional Core Facility that provides opportunities for long term stable employment and career growth. Flexibility and adaptability in work schedule and carrying out job duties are utterly important for stem cell related work which frequently demands weekend engagement to feed cells. Technician must have excellent organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Job Duties

  • Maintains Human Stem Cell and Neuronal Differentiation Core activities by ordering, preparing, and distributing reagents and materials required to support ongoing studies.
  • Performs daily procedures that includes extensive cell culturing and cell differentiation experiments, use of methods from molecular biology, gene editing, imaging and cell sorting. Performs task that involve multiple investigators and daily interactions with users of the Core. 
  • Plans and completes research experiments that includes cell cultures and performs routine biochemical, genetic, and molecular biology techniques (Western blotting, qPCR, and DNA cloning).
  • Handles and processes biological specimen (blood, skin biopsies).
  • Assists in planning and completes experimental procedures while keeping rigorous day-to-day documentation of work performed.
  • Maintains laboratory environment and helps with supply orders.
  • Prepares, conducts, and troubleshoots research experiments that includes basic molecular cloning, Western blotting, PCR, RT-PCR, immunocytochemistry, etc.
  • Documents, analyzes, and presents results.
  • Assists in the preparation of laboratory services and reports.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in cell culture, preferably with embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells, and basic molecular biology techniques is a plus.
  • Has excellent organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
