Job Title:  Research Technician II - Cell and Gene Therapy

Salary Range:  $35,591 - $41,872
FLSA Status:  Nonexempt
Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Summary

The position will be integrated within the larger Center for Cell and Gene Therapy which is a highly collaborative translational research center affiliated with Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine and Houston Methodist Hospital. This position will support ongoing pre-clinical immunotherapy research with the goal of developing and assessing novel adoptive T cell therapies to target solid tumors in the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy. The Research Technician will have direct interactions with the Principal Investigator and have ample opportunity for learning and growth. Responsibilities are mainly focused on generating experimental data. Related example responsibilities include but are not limited to presenting lab meetings at regular intervals, conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data. 

The primary responsibility of the job will be to regularly generate experimental data. The technician should have the ability and willingness to learn new skills related to tissue culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry, sequencing and animal models.  Furthermore, the technician will exhibit strong interpersonal skills as they will have extensive interactions with vendors, core facilities, other labs, and members of the growing lab.

Initially, PI will be planning the experiments and telling what to do, but hopefully as they grow, they can start to plan. Knowledge sharing and provision of technical assistance to other team members is expected, but the job does not require routine supervision of other laboratory members and there are no direct reports. And for the new techniques, it won’t be independent but under the guidance of the PI. Attendance at weekly educational seminars/lab meeting during standard work hours is generally expected.

Job Duties

  • Plans and executes laboratory research experiments.
  • Collects and analyzes data to discuss with other lab members and the PI.
  • Conducts literature searches and summarizes information related to the project.  
  • Documents results of experiments and maintains an organized electronic laboratory notebook.
  • Opens to research and applies new research techniques and protocols.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Performs other job-related duties to maintain function of the laboratory. 
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has interest in developing their research skills and interest in studying therapies to target cancer. Has a high degree of resourcefulness and ability to take initiative.
  • Has the ability and willingness to learn new skills related to tissue culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry, sequencing and animal models and exhibits strong interpersonal skills.
