Job Purpose

The Research Nurse III, under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI) and the supervisor, ensures the integrity and quality of clinical trials and sponsored research projects are maintained and conducted in accordance w/ federal, state, and local regulations, Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals, and Baylor College of Medicine policies and procedures. This Research Nurse III is primarily responsible for patient care in a clinical research area. This involves accurate completion of visit procedures and collection of information from study patients according to protocols.

Job Duties
  • Performs responsibilities in a manner that promotes quality and safe patient care and customer service.
  • Adheres to the scope of practices as defined by the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Recruits, screens, enrolls and evaluates patients that participate in a research study.
  • Schedules study visits and meetings related to studies.
  • Collects study specimens and checks subjects' vital signs.
  • Administers study medications and performs study specific procedures, as required.
  • Follows subjects' progress and advises the Principal Investigator.
  • Documents clinical research data in electronic data capture (EDC) in accordance with protocol requirements.
  • Maintains patient charts and medical records.
  • Ensures the clinical studies are conducted in accordance with guidelines of the FDA and other regulatory agencies.
  • Regularly provides updates, follows-up on projects and ensures deadlines are met by all stakeholders as required.
  • Provides patient education and medical information to study patients to ensure understanding of proper medication dosage, administration, and treatment options.
  • Serves as a liaison and distributes research information to faculty, research staff, principle investigator, and others as required.
  • Works with Principal Investigator on both local and commercial Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, including but not limited to new protocol submission, amendments and renewals.
  • Collects clinical data and enters it into a research database as required.
  • Maintains clean and safe work environment.
  • Stocks and orders supplies.
  • Provides training and guidance to research nurses and other research personnel and serves as a resource to staff.
  • Travels, occasionally, to attend sponsor study training meetings as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Required: Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. 
  • Four years of relevant experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) with a minimum of one year in research nursing. Degrees in lieu of experience will not be accepted.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advance knowledge of EPIC.
  • Experience with RedCAP database.
  • At least one (1) year experience maintaining/writing Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols.
  • At least one (1) year clinical trials research experience preferred.
  • Possess the ability to work well under pressure, multi-task, and manage deadlines.
  • Advance knowledge of research procedures, including but not limited to:
    • Coordinating sponsor monitor site visits.
    • Consenting procedures for study participants.
    • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, including HIPAA policies and procedures.

Physical Risks: Potential exposures to blood borne pathogens (blood &/or other potentially infectious materials), drugs, chemicals, radiation, and physical hazards found in patient clinics, hospitals and/or laboratory work environments and in working directly with patients and other employees. Initial Blood borne Pathogens Training is required, and a Blood borne Pathogens Refresher Training must be taken annually.
