Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Immunology, Allergy and Retrovirology Service at Texas Children's Hospital is seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and organized individual to join the Food Allergy Research Program. A professional nurse who possesses basic general knowledge of nursing practices. Provides professional nursing skills involving Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in clinical research. Responsible for following procedures as described in research protocols, according to site and sponsor Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).  Duties may include screening, enrolling participants, obtaining blood and other specimens for tests, administering medications, recording data for research analysis, and maintaining patient records. Ensures accurate data collection, documentation, organization and safety of research participants.

Job Purpose

The Research Nurse II will be responsible for coordinating day-to-day activities for the Preventing Asthma in High Risk Kids (PARK) study and implement other studies for the Food Allergy Program.   


Job Duties
  • Document clinical research data in electronic data capture (EDC).
  • Answer queries in accordance with protocol requirements.
  • Provides updates, follows-up on projects and ensures deadlines are met by all stakeholders as required.
  • Works with Principal Investigator on both local and commercial Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, including but not limited to new protocol submission, amendments and renewals.
  • Attends conference calls as required by the study sponsor and relay the information to the study staff.
  • May collect, process, ship, and maintain paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlined in study protocol.
  • Performs study related procedures as outlined in the protocol such as skin prick testing, peak flow, and spirometry.
  • Performs responsibilities in a manner that promotes quality and safe patient care and customer service.
  • Adheres to the scope of practices as defined by the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Recruits, screens, enrolls and evaluate patients that participate in a research study.
  • Schedules study visits and meetings related to studies.
  • Collects study specimens and check subjects' vital signs.
  • Administers study medications.
  • Follows subjects' progress and advises the Principal Investigator.
  • Maintains patient charts and medical records.
  • Ensures the clinical studies are conducted in accordance with guidelines of the FDA and other regulatory agencies.
  • Educates patients in significant aspects of study.
  • Serves as a liaison and distributes research information to faculty, research staff, principle investigator, and others as required.
  • May assist in developing the clinical trial agreement.
  • Maintains clean and safe work environment.
  • Provides training and guidance to research nurses and other research personnel and serves as a resource to staff.



Minimum Qualifications

Education Required: Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Experience:Two years of relevant experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). Degrees in lieu of experience will not be accepted.

Certification/Licenses/Registration:Required: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.

Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.


Physical Risks: Potential exposures to blood borne pathogens (blood &/or other potentially infectious materials), drugs, chemicals, radiation, and physical hazards found in patient clinics, hospitals and/or laboratory work environments and in working directly with patients and other employees. Initial Blood borne Pathogens Training is required, and a Blood borne Pathogens Refresher Training must be taken annually.
