The Department of Medicine, Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas is seeking a Research Dietitian that will support the research studies on dietary intervention for weight loss at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. This Research Dietitian will be working on the PI's BCM study regarding Weight Loss Studies. He/she will have primary responsibility for the lifestyle modification program and run the weekly group behavior therapy sessions which include one-on-one and group behavioral counseling to promote long-term weight loss of research participants. This Research Dietitian will need to have great communication skills, a well-organized, pleasant personality, and can work well with human research participants. Must be a team player and reliable as well as willing to learn and develop new skills.

Job Duties

  • Performs one-on-one diet/behavioral therapy sessions as necessary for individuals who are having difficulty with dietary compliance.
  • Prepares the diet prescription, go over the food diaries with the participants, and check adherence to the diets.
  • Teaches the participants how to choose low energy density foods, how to modify recipes and prepare filing meals with lower calories, how to measure portion size, etc.
  • Works closely with the participants to achieve lifestyle and behavioral change and gradual weight loss with the goal of 10% weight loss at six months and maintenance of weight loss for an additional 6 months.
  • Performs other duties as instructed by the PI to accomplish the specific aims of the research projects.
  • Conducts monthly education and support classes to motivate and enhance retention of the healthy lifestyle-control group.  
  • Collects nutritional research data via computers, questionnaires, or food records.
  • Codes the collected data for database entry.
  • Reconciles collected data for proper input.
  • Enters data into nutritional database.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or related field.
  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Nutrition or a related field.
  • Licensed Dietitian by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR).
