Job Purpose

Baylor College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Nutrition Service at the Children's Nutrition Research Center is seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and organized individual to join a research team focused on the causes and treatments of childhood obesity.

The Research Coordinator II will be responsible for coordinating day-to-day activities of clinical research protocols for the Sisley lab. This includes screening, enrollment, and monitoring of research participants. Ensures accurate data collection, documentation, organization and safety of research participants.


The Sisley lab has two ongoing research studies: 1) a longitudinal study investigating the effects of bariatric surgery in adolescents (as a member of the NIH-funded Teen-LABS study) and 2) the effects of a phase 2 drug on body weight in rare genetic disorders of obesity.  Additionally, we have a clinical registry for early-onset obesity.

Job Duties
  • Interview, screen, and recruit patients for studies. Explain process and procedures to educate participant regarding the research study.
  • Collect patient information. Process, document, and enter information into a database.
  • Collect, process, ship, and maintain paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlined in study protocol.
  • Maintain records and regulatory documents and records for research studies.
  • Schedule research participant for tests and procedures, such as blood, skin biopsy, and other studies specific for the research protocol.
  • Conduct all testing procedures required by the study.
  • Retrieve and submit test results to appropriate party.
  • Order supplies and equipment.
  • May correspond with patient throughout study.
  • Perform basic laboratory experiments to support research study, such as DNA preparation, PCR, sequencing, cell culture, etc.
  • Prepares documentation necessary to obtain initial and continued approval for the specific research protocol.
  • Attend meetings and phone conferences regarding new and current protocols
  • Conduct chart reviews to identify potential research participants.
  • Maintain and organize inventory of study supplies and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • One year of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledgeable in pharmaceutical trial regulations.
  • Experience with database management including Microsoft Access and RedCap.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish.
  • Ability to understand and implement patient studies, research protocols, and laboratory procedures.
  • Requires interpersonal skills necessary to coordinate research studies
  • Experience with basic laboratory experiments to support research study, such as DNA preparation, PCR, sequencing, cell culture, etc.
