Dr. Erica Soltero is an assistant professor in the Children’s Nutrition Research Center in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. The focus of her research is implementing community-based diabetes prevention programs for Hispanic youth and families. This work involves behavioral studies to investigate the influence of physical activity and sedentary behaviors on the development and prevention of type 2 diabetes. It also includes qualitative work focused on identifying social determinants of health that influence diabetes risk in Hispanic youth and families. Dr. Soltero is currently seeking to hire a Research Coordinator who will participate in daily research activities which include a variety of job duties centered on participant interaction, technical computer work, working with regulatory bodies (Institutional Review Board) and working collaboratively with investigators, clinicians, and community partners and members.

Job Duties

  • Interview, screen, and recruit participants for studies.
  • Explain processes and procedures to educate participant regarding the research study and obtain informed consent.
  • Collect data and documents from participants and enter information into a database.
  • May collect (point-of-care devices), process, and maintain paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlines in study protocol. On the job training for these activities will be provided.
  • May obtain vital signs and measure anthropometrics (weight, height, waist circumference) on participants. On the job training for these activities will be provided.
  • Maintain records and regulatory documents for research studies.
  • Schedule research participants for tests and procedures such as lab tests, intervention sessions, and other studies specific for the research protocol.
  • Facilitate relationships with clinics and other community-based resources for recruitment and data collection.
  • Work with principal investigator to complete IRB protocols, modifications, and continuing reviews.
  • Coordinate and assist with project meetings, meeting minutes and presentations.
  • Correspond and act as liaison for participants, investigators, IRB, sponsors, and healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain project resources, including facilitate orders for supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in developing manuscripts, progress reports, and grants, by developing data tables, conducting literature reviews, and manuscript formatting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Proficient (reading, writing, and speaking) in Spanish. Work is centered in the Hispanic population, it is necessary for obtaining parental consent, recruitment, data collection, and overall project management, that the research coordinator speak Spanish.
