Summary
The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a research coordinator to join our team at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. Our mission is to improve health and well-being through innovations in health care delivery. A critical aspect of this research is to utilize qualitative research methods to 1) gain a fuller patient-centered understanding of the needs of patients and their experiences in the quality of care and 2) understand how evidence-based practices are implemented throughout the healthcare system. The selected candidate will be an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual who is passionate about contributing to the field of health services research in emergency medicine.
This position will be specifically concerned with health services research related to emergency medicine, health equity, and care of older adults. The research will be specifically focused on improving care of older people with cognitive impairment and dementia, racial and ethnic minorities, and people who speak a non-English primary language. Patient-facing research will be based in emergency departments of the Harris Health System and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center.
The candidate will be expected to interview individuals from a variety of sociodemographic backgrounds. There is an expectation of managing and providing rapid responses to emails during business hours, with closed-loop communication acknowledging assigned tasks.
Job Duties
- Contribute to all aspects of the qualitative and mixed-methods research portfolio, including but not limited to: protocol development; literature review and synthesis; sample design and management; design and implementation of recruitment and field procedures; collection, coding, analysis, and synthesis of data; focus group moderation; preparation of project reports, project deliverables, manuscripts, and grant/contract proposals.
- Contribute to the development of surveys, semi-structured interviews, and other data collection tools used to collect and analyze qualitative and mixed-methods health services research data.
- Conduct qualitative data collection, including interviews with patients, providers, and staff; focus groups; and ethnographic observation.
- Assist the principal investigator with administrative work, including organizing communications/emails, scheduling collaborations with other researchers, maintaining the research portfolio, and manuscript and grant submission.
- Assist the principal investigator with manuscript preparation. The candidate must have strong writing skills and copy-editing abilities.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Three years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Public Health, Pre-Medical, or a relevant field. No experience required with preferred degree.
- Three years of relevant experience preferred.
- Must have superior organizational and communication skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and qualitative data analysis programs is preferred.
- Proficiency in English and Spanish is ideal.

Candidate must be courteous and polite as engaging with patients and healthcare providers is involved in the daily work. Candidate must be self-motivated and able to work independently with guidance from study leadership. Reliability and ability to complete work by agreed upon deadlines is essential. Rapid response to email during business hours is required. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple research activities will be key in this position. There will be numerous opportunities for co-authorship in publications in peer-reviewed journals. Many duties of this position can be carried out remotely. Some research activities will occur in person (i.e. patient recruitment).
