Job Purpose

The Mustoe Lab is seeking a Research Associate / Lab Manager excited to help establish a new lab. The lab’s work lies at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and computation, and its primary focus is on defining the roles of RNA structure in gene regulation (see mustoelab.org for more information).

The primary job responsibility will be to work with the principal investigator to pilot and troubleshoot new projects. As such, the candidate should have the desire and capability to work independently on varied functional genomics and molecular biology projects.  Experience in fundamental molecular biology techniques such as gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, PCR, and molecular cloning is essential. Experience in one or more of the following is helpful: functional genomics (such as RNA-Seq); reporter assays; RNA biochemistry; genetic perturbation techniques such as RNAi and CRISPR; using command-line computer scripts to analyze data.  A secondary job responsibility will be to perform lab managerial duties such as ordering equipment and supplies, maintaining instrumentation, and help train less experienced research staff/trainees.

Job Duties
  • Design, prepare and conduct laboratory research experiments (especially functional genomics experiments similar to RNA-seq).
  • Construct and maintain new and existing mammalian cell lines.
  • Analyze and document results of experiments and report to principal investigator.
  • Perform lab managerial duties for a small lab, including ordering equipment and supplies and maintaining instrumentation.
  • Conduct literature searches and summarize information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Supervise, schedule and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff.
