Summary
We are looking for an experienced scientist who has an excellent background in fly and mouse genetics. The position requires working as part of a team with day to day communication with research technicians and postdoctoral fellows. The Research Associate will test new drugs in mice and flies and characterize phenotypes of mutant flies using a variety of biochemical, genetic and behavioral assays. Will also create new stocks/stains and conduct animal studies to test drugs and genetic interactions. The Research Associate will perform DNA cloning and genetic crosses with fly and mice, screening for visible markers and conduct molecular and biochemical tests to assess the function of genes and how drugs impact these markers. Will be assisted by a research technician and plan and organize the needed experiments and genotyping assays. A track record of team work is preferable.
Job Duties
- Generate new fly and mouse strains to study novel genetic pathways and test drugs that should alleviate symptoms associated with animal models of human diseases
- Monitor the phenotypes associated with mice and fly mutants that model human disease
- Deliver drugs to mice and flies
- Carry out behavioral assays in mice and flies
- Perform biochemical assays to assess the impact of drugs
- Create and characterize new variants/mutations and assess their phenotypes
- Determine the cellular phenotypes associated with the variants/mutants
- Perform other job related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field. Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
- Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.
Department Specific Criteria
- This project involves generation of sophisticated genetic mouse and fly models. Experience in advanced DNA cloning techniques and mouse and Drosophila genetics and behavioral assays is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD and three years of postdoctoral experience.
- Extensive experience with mice and flies.
- Excellent organizational skills will greatly benefit productivity.
