Summary
The Section of Epidemiology and Population Sciences in the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a part-time Research Assistant I to support population health and outcomes research projects. Under supervision, the RA will assist with protocol-driven data collection, data management, and basic analyses, and will contribute to literature reviews and research documentation. The role supports production of reproducible research outputs (tables, figures, and brief reports) for manuscripts, abstracts, and grants.
Job Duties
- Assist with protocol-driven research activities (e.g., chart abstraction, survey/registry data collection) under PI guidance.
- Collect, compile, clean, and manage datasets; perform QC checks; maintain data dictionaries and analysis logs.
- Conduct descriptive and basic inferential analyses; generate tables/figures; summarize results for the investigative team.
- Conduct literature searches; manage references; and draft brief evidence summaries to support study aims and methods.
- Develop/modify scripts in R/Python for data transformation, geocoding/linkage, and visualization using documented workflows.
- Apply and document SOPs for research data handling, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance (IRB/HIPAA, as applicable).
- Maintain secure file organization and required software/tools; perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Support epidemiology and population sciences studies focused on health outcomes and social determinants of health (SDOH).
- Assist with spatial data processing (geocoding, tract linkage, area-level SDOH measures) using ArcGIS Pro and/or R/Python.
- Prepare, clean, and integrate multi-source datasets (EHR extracts, registries, public/environmental and demographic data).
- Create draft maps, figures, and data visualizations for reporting and dissemination (abstracts, posters, manuscripts).
- Document workflows (analysis logs, data dictionaries, readme files) and support version control practices (e.g., GitHub).
- Participate in project meetings, track action items, and contribute to progress reports and research deliverables.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
- Two years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Public Health, Bioinformatics, Data Analytics, Epidemiology or related field is high preferred.
- Experience in GIS (Geographic Information System).
- Experience with data programming like Python and R.
