Summary
The Research Accounting Specialist supports Sponsored Projects Finance (SPF) by performing a full range of accounting functions, including billing, collections, financial reporting, transaction entry, and maintenance of master grant data. This role ensures that all financial activities comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as well as federal, state, and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) policies and guidelines.
Highly qualified candidates residing in Texas may be considered for remote work. Occasional travel to Houston for work‑related meetings will be required, and travel expenses will be the responsibility of the employee.
Job Duties
- Prepares routine billings to external sponsors for sponsored agreements in accordance with the sponsor’s requirements.
- Gathers supporting documents in response to requests from sponsors and external auditors.
- Tactfully communicates with sponsors to inquire as to the status of payments due.
- Maintains basic grant master data elements in BCM’s financial system.
- Drafts financial reports to initiate grant close-out. Reviews entries, verifies amounts and compares balances, and interpret trends or deviations from expected results.
- Maintains complete and accurate files, including supporting documentation, for all reports, billings, journal entries and analysis.
- Responsible for updating and maintaining financial records.
- Ensures that all transactions are made in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and federal, state, and Baylor College of Medicine guidelines.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field. Four years of relevant experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- No experience required with Bachelor’s degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working in a research academic setting or comparable environment, a plus.
- Proficiency in Excel.
