This RNII position is in an office based setting, not within a hospital setting. It is a 40 hour work week with no nights or weekends. 


The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse. This position will assist during office-based surgical procedures and will be expected to administer concious sedation medications. Position is expected to perform duties related to assisting in surgical procedures in an office-based setting and should be comfortable with intubation and maintaining airways.

Job Purpose

Competent level professional nurse who is proficient in delivering patient care in the ambulatory care setting. Assists physicians with treatment room examination and procedures, schedules tests and appointments, answers patient calls, records and communicates information to referring physicians. Serves as a resource for Licensed Vocational Nurses, Registered Nurses I’s, and unlicensed staff members.

Job Duties

People – 10%

Service – 45%

  • Utilizes acquired knowledge and skills related to pre-procedural, peri-procedural and post procedural equipment and protocols to provide safe, individualized patient care.
  • Ensures that all labs are current and updated within Epic EMR.
  • IV skill, must have the ability to start peripheral IV in pre-procedure patient.
  • Obtains vital signs, and blood sugar reading if health history indicates.
  • Prepares patient and equipment for the procedure as directed by the type of procedure and the direction of the physician.
  • Administers conscious sedation and monitor patient during procedure. 
  • Completes and records documentation appropriately and thoroughly.


Quality/Safety – 45%

  • Observes infection control procedures to minimize the risk of cross-contamination between patients and staff. Practices universal precautions at all times.
  • Maintains confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Two years of relevant experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). Degrees in lieu of experience will not be accepted.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing procedural and recovery areas with surgical support experience.
  • Hospital Cath Lab experience.
  • Experience assisting in hand procedures.
  • ACLS highly preferred.
  • Experience in surgical areas.
  • Moderate sedation experience. 
  • ICU or PACU nursing experience is a plus. 


Physical Risks: Potential exposures to blood borne pathogens (blood &/or other potentially infectious materials), drugs, chemicals, radiation, and physical hazards found in patient clinics, hospitals and/or laboratory work environments and in working directly with patients and other employees. Initial Blood borne Pathogens Training is required, and a Blood borne Pathogens Refresher Training must be taken annually.
