The Department of Surgery, Vascular Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a competent Registered Nurse who will provide clinical and procedural support to the Center for Ambulatory Surgical Interventions (CfAST) at the McNair Clinic. Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager, the individual will perform duties related to assisting in surgical procedures in an office-based setting and should be comfortable with intubation and maintaining airways.

Job Duties

  • Utilizes acquired knowledge and skills related to pre-procedural, peri-procedural and post procedural equipment and protocols to provide safe, individualized patient care.
  • Obtains complete health history during pre-procedure.
  • Assesses pre-existing health problems, and identifying new medical issues.
  • Ensures that all labs are current and within the patient records.
  • IV skill, must have the ability to start peripheral IV in pre-procedure patient, the knowledge of normal vital sign parameters and what supplies are needed, and what is a safe IV start for the patient.
  • Obtains vital signs, and blood sugar reading if health history indicates.
  • Prepares patient and equipment for the procedure as directed by the type of procedure and the direction of the physician.
  • Obtains proper consent for the procedure, must be witnessed and signed by surgeon prior to patient entering procedure room.
  • Assists in the preparation of the procedure room, and in the cleaning post procedural when not assigned to recovery. When room is ready, bring patient in and prepare patient.
  • Remains attentive to the patient by standing at the head during moderate sedation, and to the progress of the procedure.
  • Completes and records documentation appropriately and thoroughly.
  • Observes infection control procedures to minimize the risk of cross-contamination between patients and staff.
  • Practices universal precautions at all times.
  • Demonstrates the desire and ability to cross train in all areas of the procedural center as directed.
  • Relieves other nurses/ team members for breaks as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains open communication with team members, Nurse Manager/ Director, surgeons.
  • Demonstrates positive outlook and friendly manner to patients and staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Two years of relevant experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). Degrees in lieu of experience will not be accepted.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Experience in a surgical setting is preferred and special preference is given to candidates with procedural experience.
  • Candidates must be comfortable with intubation and maintaining airways.
