The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center within the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology section is seeking a Registered Nurse to join the team supporting the clinical and research operations of the Medical Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center- Dr. Manreet Kaur. Duties include but are not limited to desktop/phone triage, research appointment scheduling and follow-up, assisting with outpatient procedures such as blood work, and other tasks necessary to facilitate research patient care. The position requires a person able to lead and work well with a diverse team.

Job Duties

  • Provide care coordination, assessment and triage, medication management and clinical support to Dr. Kaur in the clinic setting to ensure prescriptions are refilled in a timely fashion.
  • Review test results and disseminate to patients.
  • Perform medical record review, follow developed protocols, determine appropriate patient scheduling, assist with monitoring diagnostic results and patient care progress/processes as requested by the provider, and participate in quality reviews.
  • Work closely alongside an existing team of medical assistants, research coordinators and schedulers.
  • Screen patients for clinical trials, review lab results as part of clinical trial participation and perform telephone follow ups for subjects enrolled.
  • Work in collaboration with the research team to ensure all study data are being collected and recorded in a timely fashion in accordance with Good Clinical Practice Guidelines. 
  • Assess learning needs and educate patients and family as appropriate concerning disease management.
  • Ensures that referrals to other specialists, radiological, endoscopic and laboratory testing are coordinated with patients and referring physicians.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing for newly licensed nurses.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience in an Ambulatory Clinic/Practice setting preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Gastroenterology or Endoscopy-related patient care delivery as an RN experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience providing in-person triage and direct patient care for acute and chronic conditions as appropriate for an ambulatory outpatient setting.
  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively in the healthcare setting.
  • Experience with telephone triage and telephone-based clinical assessment techniques. 
  • Experience in communications and customer service; experience with team-based care and Case Management.
  • This is the safe, effective, and appropriate disposition of health-related problems and includes: assessing the severity of symptoms, communicating urgent patient needs to the LIP, referral to appropriate setting or level of care, documenting interventions, and an individualized plan of care using an EMR, education of patients and families on their disease process and interventions to promote health and well-being, preliminary interpretation of data, providing home health advice and follow-up, ability to make triage decisions quickly and calmly in emergency situations, and assuring continuity of care.


Physical Risks: Potential exposures to blood borne pathogens (blood &/or other potentially infectious materials), drugs, chemicals, radiation, and physical hazards found in patient clinics, hospitals and/or laboratory work environments and in working directly with patients and other employees. Initial Blood borne Pathogens Training is required, and a Blood borne Pathogens Refresher Training must be taken annually.
