Summary
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) invites applications for a two-year residency in therapeutic medical physics. The BCM Medical Physics Residency Program aims to cultivate medical physicists capable of practicing radiation oncology physics independently. The program prepares residents for ABR certification in Therapeutic Radiological Physics, adhering to the standards of the AAPM and CAMPEP.
Job Duties
- Participates in educational activities of the Radiation Oncology residency program.
- Attends and actively participates in clinical conferences, seminars, and departmental meetings.
- Presents the findings and research at meetings and professional conferences as required.
- Participates in the development and presents educational content for staff, residents, and students.
- Completes assigned coursework and exams related to medical physics, radiation safety, and quality assurance.
- Engages in continuing education opportunities to keep up with the latest advancements in the field.
- Participates in clinical activities under the guidance of a licensed Medical Physicist.
- Performs routine quality assurance (QA) testing for radiation therapy equipment, including linear accelerators, treatment planning systems, and imaging devices (CT, MRI, PET, etc.).
- Participates in the commissioning and calibration of radiation therapy devices, imaging systems, and associated equipment.
- Collaborates with radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, and therapists to ensure accurate treatment planning and delivery.
- Performs radiation dose calculations for external beam and brachytherapy treatments.
- Assists in the development, validation, and implementation of new treatment techniques, including IMRT, VMAT, Brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).
- Provides support for diagnostic imaging modalities such as X-ray, CT, MRI, PET/CT, and ultrasound.
- Contributes to the maintenance and optimization of radiation safety protocols and patient protection measures.
- Performs patient-specific quality assurance for radiation therapy treatments.
- Participates in clinical research activities as they relate to medical physics and radiation therapy.
- Participates in ongoing clinical and translational research projects related to medical physics.
- Assists in the design and implementation of experiments and clinical trials, focusing on the development of new techniques, technologies, or methodologies in radiation therapy or imaging.
- Contributes to the publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- MS or Ph.D from a CAMPEP- accredited Medical Physics graduate program, or
- Ph.D. in physics or a related discipline and completed a CAMPEP-accredited certificate program.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of graduate coursework in medical physics, including courses in radiological physics, radiation therapy, medical imaging, and radiation protection.
- Previous experience with medical physics instrumentation, radiation therapy equipment, and imaging systems.
- Certification or eligibility to sit for the American Board of Radiology (ABR) exams in Medical Physics.
