Summary

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking a part-time psychiatrist to provide Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry services at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. The psychiatrist will evaluate and treat patients with psychiatric conditions in medical, surgical, emergency, and rehabilitation settings and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to support comprehensive patient care. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent clinical judgment, strong communication skills, and a commitment to patient-centered care, education, and collaboration.

Job Duties

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and consultations for hospitalized patients with medical and surgical conditions at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center (Main Campus and McNair Campus) and the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (McNair Campus).
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage psychiatric disorders in medically complex patients across inpatient settings.
  • Communicate diagnostic impressions, treatment recommendations, and ongoing care plans effectively with referring physicians and interdisciplinary treatment teams.
  • Prescribe and manage appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions for psychiatric conditions.
  • Provide psychoeducation to patients and family members regarding psychiatric diagnoses, treatment options, and recovery planning.
  • Deliver follow-up psychiatric care to active patients on the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry service.
  • Conduct emergency psychiatric assessments and crisis evaluations for patients presenting to affiliated emergency departments.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, trainees, social workers, case managers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Ensure timely and accurate handoff communications and patient sign-outs to support continuity of care, including transition of care to weekday consultation teams following call coverage.
  • Serve as a professional role model and contribute to the education and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees participating in the service.
  • Partner with case management and social work teams to support discharge planning and facilitate appropriate transitions of care.
  • Coordinate with consultation service administrative staff and hospital-based social workers to arrange outpatient psychiatric follow-up and continuity of care following discharge.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation within the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in assigned weekend call coverage and consultation service schedules, with opportunities for additional weekend and holiday moonlighting coverage.
  • Comply with institutional, departmental, hospital, and regulatory requirements related to patient care, documentation, and quality improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Work Schedule

This is a 20-hour part-time position with scheduled clinical coverage on the Psychiatry Consultation Service. Weekend call responsibilities are required as assigned. Additional weekend and holiday moonlighting opportunities may be available.

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an accredited Psychiatry residency program.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Emergency Psychiatry, Hospital Psychiatry, or Academic Psychiatry.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary healthcare environments.
