Summary
The Pokorny Clinical Research Fellow is a post‑graduate intern position within the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. This one‑year, mentored research fellowship is designed to provide rigorous training in clinical and academic research while fostering professional development in academic pediatric surgery. The fellow will gain hands‑on experience in research methodology, critical appraisal of medical literature, data analysis, and scholarly dissemination, with the goal of preparing future leaders in pediatric surgery and advancing high‑quality research that improves surgical care for children.
Job Purpose
Provides postgraduates a temporary professional learning experience in which participants gain practical work experience related to a graduate’s field of study.
Must be a part of a formal program to train recent graduates in their specialized profession.
Job Duties
- Read, review, and critically analyze relevant medical and scientific literature
- Master and apply new experimental and research methodologies
- Conduct clinical or laboratory research projects under faculty mentorship
- Analyze research data and generate figures and visualizations of results
- Prepare research abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts for publication
- Complete at least one independent research project with submission to a national meeting and completion of a manuscript
- Attend and actively participate in weekly Pediatric Surgery clinical research meetings and provide regular project updates
- Participate in the “Science and Summer” lecture series focused on basic science, translational, and clinical research
- Collaborate with faculty, research staff, and other laboratories as part of multidisciplinary research efforts
- Perform additional laboratory tasks as needed, such as equipment maintenance and supply preparation, under supervision
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of postsecondary applicable degree/training program.
- May require licensure or certification in related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree completed prior to the start of the fellowship
- Strong interest in pediatric surgery, academic medicine, or clinical research
- Interest in pursuing a career in academic surgery or a related medical field
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a research team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Motivation to present research at local, institutional, and national scientific meetings
