Summary

The Sheehan lab's research focus is on developing novel treatments for patients living with sickle cell disease (SCD). We apply genomics and transcriptomics to the questions of fetal hemoglobin induction and clinical severity in SCD. We have access to thousands of genomic samples with extended phenotypic information. After genomic associations are identified by our bioinformatics collaborators, the Sheehan Lab validates the associations with functional studies in primary cell culture and animal models. Transcriptomic data related to fetal hemoglobin response to hydroxyurea has already been analyzed, and candidates identified. These candidates need to be validated functionally in cell lines and then in primary erythroid culture. The appropriate candidate has a strong background in molecular biology techniques such as shRNA knockdown, CRISPR/Cas9, western blot, RT q-PCR and tissue culture techniques. Experience with rodent models a plus.
